Steels are one of the most used materials in the world used in many applications. Steel are one of the most recyclable and sustainable materials. Steels and steel production technologies are the strategic areas in many branches. To obtain the high quality of the final products the quality and many properties of steel alone and knowledge about steel behaviour and optimized technologies are needed to be competitive on the market.
This contribution presents the possibilities of Laboratory of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry of the VSB-TUO, FMST, Department of Chemistry and Physico-Chemical processes. Laboratory is well equipped with devices for thermal analysis and calorimetry and uses well established methods for materials study and characterization. Main methods used for characterization are (TG Thermogravimetry, simultaneous TG/DTA-Differential Thermal Analysis, TG/DSC-Differential Scanning Calorimetry, EGA-Evolved Gas Analysis as MS-Mass Spectrometry and/or GC/MS-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, 3D DSC, DROP Calorimetry and Dilatometry). Further methods which can be applied for materials characterization at VSB are LFA-Laser Flash Analysis, MTPS-Modified Transient Plane Source Method, viscometry and device for surface properties study.
Key properties are studied in the frame of laboratory (phase transitions temperatures like e.g. solidus and liquidus temperatures and phase transition temperatures in solid phase as well, phase diagrams construction, Cp-Specific Heats, CTE-Coefficients of Thermal expansion, density, heats of fusion/solidification and other phase transitions, thermal conductivity,…, all the quantities are measured in dependence on temperature and is possible to obtain these at heating and cooling process). The heats of dissolution/mixing (heat of accumulation/release) of ferro-alloys in liquid steel/iron melts is possible to perform using DROP Calorimetry to characterize the alloying process from thermal point of view. Experimental results are support by the results obtained via Thermo-Calc, Dictra and JMatPro SW used at FMST. The relations between chemical and phase composition and resulting behaviour is realized in our laboratory.
Many of presented quantities are of a key importance for steel technologies directly or indirectly via results of modelling and simulations. It can be stated: “with insufficient data it is easy to go wrong” (Carl Sagan).

Modern metallurgical technologies belong to a group of dynamically developing technologies that require continuous improvement and systematic implementation of innovative solutions. The development of this field aims not only at improving the quality of the obtained metallurgical products but also at increasing the efficiency of production processes and reducing manufacturing costs. The contemporary metallurgical industry places increasingly higher demands on both the quality of materials and the optimization of technological processes. Therefore, conducting advanced scientific research and detailed process analyses has become essential. The introduction of new technologies and the modernization of existing metallurgical processes require a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena occurring during the production of metals and alloys. Understanding the mechanisms of mass, energy, and momentum transfer in multiphase systems plays a crucial role in the proper design and optimization of technological processes. The most important sources of such knowledge are industrial practice as well as scientific research.
One of the most important research methods used in the analysis of metallurgical processes is physical modeling, particularly with the use of water models. Such models allow the reproduction of hydrodynamic phenomena occurring in real industrial devices while maintaining appropriate similarity criteria between the model and the real system. Conducting experimental research directly under industrial conditions is extremely difficult due to extreme operating environments, such as very high temperatures, dense fumes, intensive mixing of phases, and metal and slag atomization. Moreover, experiments carried out in industrial installations are very expensive and may disrupt the continuity of production processes. For these reasons, physical modeling provides a safe and cost-effective method for studying metallurgical processes, allowing numerous experiments to be performed under controlled laboratory conditions.
An important role in the study and analysis of phenomena occurring during steel production is played by the Laboratory of Metallurgical Process Modeling, which has been operating for many years within the Department of Metallurgy and Recycling. This laboratory enables research on processes occurring during steel production as well as during its secondary metallurgical treatment. By applying appropriate modeling methods, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms occurring in liquid metal and in metal-slag-gas systems. The paper presents exemplary results of research carried out using physical (water) models that enable the modeling of processes occurring during the basic oxygen converter process, ladle furnace treatment, and continuous steel casting. The results, concerning parameters such as flow characteristics and mixing time, will be presented and allow for the visualization and a more detailed understanding of the analyzed phenomena.

In an era of rising environmental and economic challenges, Danieli shows how digitalization is not simply an enabler but a true catalyst for industrial transformation. With the digital ecosystem Danieli delivers a fully integrated, data‑driven steelmaking platform from Scrap to Tundish.
These solutions provide real-time process optimization, predictive maintenance, and adaptive energy management, enabling steelmakers to significantly reduce OPEX, boost productivity, and cut CO₂ emissions.
The presentation will highlight how Danieli’s innovations are reshaping modern steel production—turning today’s pressures into opportunities for sustainable growth and long-term competitive advantage.
From an economic burden to a competitive profitable differentiator. Reconciling the requirement for industrial production of steel with the reduction of waste (energy, materials, emissions, etc) is a constant balance exercise of steel mills. The steel operators must define environmental and circular milestones that are enhancing maintaining a viable manufacturing base that can compete in the international markets. The authors elaborate on the mayor lean efficiency development of the steel industry to demonstrate their solid link to sustainable circular practices and, more over, they will argue that the critical strategic considerations for steel production and competitiveness in key market are equally influenced by energy/environmental efficiency. The competitive edge and market legislation framework play a key role that requires a deeper understanding of the effect of greener practices on costs, exports and competition. Sustainable circular practices must be understood and implemented as an industry robustness enabler when confronted with colossal challenges.
Over the past decade, steelmaking has undergone substantial technological evolution, with particularly significant advancements in secondary metallurgy and ladle‑refining operations. The implementation of advanced secondary metallurgy practices has enabled tighter control over residual elements, non‑metallic inclusion populations, and gaseous impurities. Nitrogen control has become a critical performance indicator, particularly for steel grades sensitive to strain aging, toughness loss, or fatigue performance. To address this, the article provides an in‑depth discussion of nitrogen control with different metallurgical facilities.
Special attention is given to nitrogen removal technologies used in vacuum treatment processes. These methods collectively contribute to achieving lower steady‑state nitrogen levels, supporting production of ultra‑low‑nitrogen steels required in automotive, energy, and high‑formability applications.
The article ultimately aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of nitrogen behaviour across the entire secondary‑metallurgy route. By presenting the performance limits and design considerations of each denitrogenation technique, it establishes a robust framework for applying Best Available Techniques (BAT) during new project planning, metallurgical audits, and process‑equipment selection.

Významnou výhodou této aplikace je možnost postupného přimíchávání vodíku do zemního plynu, což umožňuje postupné a technologicky efektivní snižování emisní zátěže.
Úplná dekarbonizace hutnictví v Moravskoslezském kraji by vyžadovala stovky tisíc tun vodíku ročně. Takové množství dnes Česká republika není schopna vyrobit a s vysokou pravděpodobností jej nebude možné do roku 2035 do regionu ani v potřebném rozsahu dopravit.
Příspěvek poukáže na některé technologie výroby "Zelené oceli" a některé technologie na snižování CO2 a výrobu vodíku.
V souvislosti s připravovanými investičními projekty a dlouhodobým technologickým rozvojem probíhá v Třineckých železárnách modernizace laboratorního zázemí zaměřená na experimentální podporu optimalizace metalurgických procesů. Implementace těchto zařízení rozšiřuje experimentální kapacity podnikových laboratoří a umožňuje detailnější studium procesních parametrů s cílem podpořit technologickou optimalizaci a stabilitu výrobních procesů.
Metalurgický průmysl produkuje značné objemy odpadních materiálů, zejména formovacích směsí, špon, odprašků a strusek.

This paper follows on from last year's review of artificial intelligence tools in industrial control and updates it with key trends from 2025. A fundamental shift has occurred in the area of large language models (LLMs), which have become a standard part of the enterprise environment - notably models GPT-4o, Claude 3.7, Gemini 2.0 and DeepSeek R1. Concurrently, there has been a massive expansion of agentic AI systems, which - unlike conversational chatbots - autonomously plan, reason and execute multi-level workflows. The paper describes key differences between cloud-based and on-premise LLM deployment, approaches to building custom enterprise language systems (fine-tuning, RAG, private models), and methods for automated processing of corporate technical documentation. Specific industrial deployments at companies such as Siemens, ABB and SMS Group are discussed. The paper concludes with perspectives for heavy industry and steelmaking in the context of the EU AI Act regulatory framework.
A useful neutron diffraction method for mapping of residual strains/stresses inside polycrystalline materials which is not well known in some sectors of industry, will be introduced. The method routinely used on the dedicated instrument of NPI ASCR installed at the 10 MW research reactor operated by the Research Centre Řež, is offered for external users free. Typical examples are measurements of residual strains/stresses developed e.g. in the course of welding or strains accumulated during processing and/or by fatigue of instrument components after usage after some operation. Recommended thickness t of the samples is in the range from 3 mm to 20 mm and the specimen weight up to 50 kg. The experimental data are elaborated by the instrument responsible person and then basic figures and graphs are prepared for the user. In addition, thanks to variety instrument environment, for specially prepared samples, in-situ measurements on samples subjected external thermo-mechanical load can be carried out and thus, e.g. to study the deformation and transformation mechanisms.
